Caroline County, Certificates of Freedom, 1827-1857

State of Maryland Caroline County to wit; Whereas application hath
been made to me by a negro man named Andrew Henry for a Certificate
of his freedom agreeably to the act of assembly in such cases made and provided
by which said acts free negroes and mulattoe's are permitted to travel out of
this State upon the obtention of a certificate of being free born, And whereas
also upon the oath of William F. Chilton of Caroline County  aforesaid that the
said negro Andrew Henry for whom this Certificate is made
was free born I do therefore grant his said application and hereby certify
that from his fathers account he was twenty two years of age on the first day
of March last past five feet three and a half inches high or thereabouts was
born and raised in Caroline County and of a mulattoe Complexion and
the ring finger of his left hand is a little defamed by a gathering as he
says and has no other notable marks or scars that I have observed
(Seal)                         In Testimony whereof I hereto subscribe my name &
                                  affix the public seal of my office this twelfth
                                  day of January Anno Domini 1841

Certificate of his freedom agreeably to the act of Assembly in such case made
and provided by which said acts free negroes and mulattoes are permitted to travel
out of this State upon the obtention of a Certificate of being free born  And whereas
also upon the oath of Jonathan Spencer of Caroline County aforesaid that
the said negro man named Samuel; Hawkins for whom this certificate is made
was free born; I do therefore grant his said application and hereby certify that
from his own account he is now about twenty three years of age five feet eight
inches high or thereabouts was born in Queen Anns County and raised in Caroline
County aforesaid and of a brown complexion and has two small scars on his left elbow
joint and has no other notable marks or scars that I have observed
(Seal)                      In Testimony whereof I hereto subscribe my name and affix
                               the public seal of my office this 28.th day of January A D.
