126 application and hereby certify that from his own account he was twenty one years of age about the first day of July last past five feet seven and three quarter inches high or thereabouts born and raised in Caroline County Complexion Black and has no notable marks or scars that I have observed (seal) In Testimony whereof I hereto subscribe my name and affix the public seal of my office this 2.d day of March A. D. 1838 Cost $1.00 Jo Richardson Clk of Caroline County Court State ^of^ Maryland Caroline County to wit; Whereas heretofore to wit on the twenty third day day of December seventeen hundred and ninety nine a certain Sarah Hardcastle and Solomon Kenton of Caroline County by deed of Manumission duly executed acknowledged & recorded among the Land records of Caroline County did manumit and set free among others a negro man called Stephen to be free and at at perfect liberty on the first day of January Eighteen hundred and seven and the said negro man named Stephen having made application to me for a certificate of freedom agreeably to the acts of Assembly is such case made and provided; and whereas also upon the oath of Eliza Atkinson of Caroline County that the said negro man Stephen for whom is this certificate is made is the same person mentioned in said manumission I do therefore grant his said application and hereby certify that from his own is expressed in said manumission he was fifty six years of age on the 23d day of December last past five feet seven inches high or thereabouts complexion nearly black born and raised in Talbot County his fore finger on his left hand crooked at the last joint and has a scar of a cut on his right hand between his wrist and thumb and has no other notable mark or scars that I have observed (seal) In Testimony Whereof I hereto subscribe my name and affix the public seal of my office this 9th day of March Anno Domini 1838 Jo Richardson Clk of Cost $1.00 Caroline County Courts State of Maryland Caroline County to wit; Whereas Application hath been made to me by a negro man Alexander Canada for a certificate of his freedom agreeably to the acts of Assembly in such case made by which said acts free negroes and mulattoes are permitted to travel out of this State upon the obtention of a certificate of being free born and whereas also upon the oath of Hugh Taylor of Caroline County that aforesaid |
