Witness my hand the day and year above written paid Gassaway Winterson 2½ Recorded the 12.th day of November 1814 To all whom it may concern be it known that I James Cheston of Anne Arundel County State of Maryland for divers good causes and considerations me thereunto moving having released from slavery liberated manumitted and set free and by these presents do hereby liberate manumit and set free my negro woman Charlotte Davis to effect on Jan.y 1.st 1846 Also my negro girl Sally Smith to take effect on Jan.y 1.st 1858 Also my negro girl Sophy Carroll to take effect on Jan.y 1.st 1853 and also my negro boy James Smith to take effect on Jan.y 1.st 1855 at which dates they will be of age and able to work & again a sufficient livelihood and maintenance and them the said negroes I do declare to be free manumitted and discharged from all manner of service or servitude to me my executors or administrators from & after the dates above mentioned. In Witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal this 12.th day of November in the year of our Lord 1844 Signed sealed and delivered in the Ja.s Cheston (seal) presence of J W Hunter On the back of the aforegoing was thus written to wit Anne Arundel County to wit: On this 12.th day of November 1814 personally appears James Cheston before the subscriber a Justice of the Peace in and for the county aforesaid and acknowledged the within deed or instrument of writing to be his act and deed according to the true intent and meaning thereof and the Acts of Assembly in such case made and provided Witness my hand the day and year above written paid J W Hunter 2½ Recorded the 12.th day of November 1844 |
