    on the eleventh day of January in the year
of our lord eighteen hundred and nine
personally came margaret Callahan
of the city of annapolis before me the
subscriber one of the Justices of the
peace in and for anne arundel county
aforesaid and acknowledged the
foregoing instrument of writing to be
her act and deed

    To all whom it may concern be it known that I
Philip J. Thomas of anne arundel county in the state of
maryland for and in consideration of the sum of two
hundred dollars current money to me in hand paid
have released from slavery liberated manumited
and set free and by these presents od hereby
release from slavery liberate manumit and set free
my negro woman Betty being about the
age of forty years and my negro girl
polly about the age of seven years and
both of them able to work and gain a
sufficient livelihood and maintenance and
them the said negro woman Betty and the
said negro girl Polly I do declare to be hence
