244 personally appears before me the Subscriber a Justice of the peace for the County aforesaid the above mentioned free negro Hercules and Acknowledges the above Instrument of writing to be his Act and deed according to the true intent & meaning thereof Acknowledged before Recd the 22nd October 1805 S Cromwell Exam.d Deed of Manumission To all whom it may Concern be it known that I Mary Jiams of Anne Arundel County in the State of maryland for divers good Causes and Considerations me thereunto moving as also in further Consideration of five shillings Current money to me in hand paid have released from slavery liberated manumitted and set free and by these presents do hereby release from Slavery liberate manumit and Set free my negroe boy named Will being of the age of Twenty years and able to work and gain a sufficient livelihood and maintenance and him the said negro boy named Will I do declare to be henceforth free manumitted and discharged from all manner of servitude or Service to me my Executors or administrators for ever. In Testimony whereof I have hereunto Set my hand and ^affixed my^ seal this 21.st day of October in the year of our lord one thousand Eight hundred and five her Signed Sealed & delivered In the presence of us Mary + Ijams (seal) William Wotton mark John M Duvall |
