(D) "SHRIVER CENTER" MEANS THE SHRIVER CENTER LOCATED AT
THE UNIVERSITY OF MARYLAND, BALTIMORE COUNTY.
(E) "SUMMER INTERNSHIP" MEANS A PAID OR UNPAID SUMMER
INTERNSHIP IN THE STATE WITH:
(1) AN ORGANIZATION, INSTITUTION, ASSOCIATION, SOCIETY, OR
CORPORATION THAT:
(I) IS EXEMPT FROM TAXATION UNDER § 501(C)(3) OR (4)
OF THE INTERNAL REVENUE CODE OF 1986; AND
(II) AFFORDS THE STUDENT THE OPPORTUNITY TO
PARTICIPATE IN AND SUPPORT MANAGEMENT FUNCTIONS, INCLUDING BOARD
GOVERNANCE, EXECUTIVE LEADERSHIP, FINANCIAL MANAGEMENT, HUMAN
RESOURCES, FUND RAISING, OR FACILITIES MANAGEMENT; OR
(2) THE STATE OR ANY LOCAL GOVERNMENT IN THE STATE.
18-1702.
(A) THERE IS A SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM KNOWN AS THE WALTER
SONDHEIM JR. PUBLIC SERVICE SUMMER INTERNSHIP SCHOLARSHIP
PROGRAM IN THE STATE.
(B) THE PURPOSE OF THE PROGRAM IS TO ASSIST COLLEGE AND
GRADUATE STUDENTS TO EXPLORE PUBLIC SERVICE CAREER OPPORTUNITIES
THROUGH SUMMER INTERNSHIPS.
(C) THE SHRIVER CENTER SHALL ADMINISTER THE PROGRAM.
(D) (1) ON OR BEFORE JANUARY 1 OF EACH YEAR, AN INSTITUTION
OF HIGHER EDUCATION IN THE STATE MAY NOMINATE ELIGIBLE STUDENTS TO
PARTICIPATE IN THE PROGRAM.
(2) AN ELIGIBLE STUDENT ATTENDING AN INSTITUTION OF
HIGHER EDUCATION OUTSIDE OF THE STATE MAY APPLY DIRECTLY TO THE
SHRIVER CENTER TO PARTICIPATE IN THE PROGRAM.
(E) PRIORITY FOR PARTICIPATION IN THE PROGRAM SHALL BE GIVEN
TO AN ELIGIBLE STUDENT WHO:
