[(2) "Family practice" means the medical specialty as defined by the
American Board of Family Practice.]

[(3)] (4) "Service obligation" means employment in the State in the
family practice of medicine in an area determined by the Secretary of Health and
Mental Hygiene, in cooperation with the Medical and Chirurgical Faculty of
Maryland, to have an acute need for physicians in family practice.

(d) (1) Following graduation from medical school, the recipient shall enter a
family practice residency [program;] PROGRAM.

(2) Immediately following completion of the residency program, the
recipient shall:

(I) [perform] PERFORM the service obligation; and

[(3)] (II) Satisfy any additional criteria the Office may establish.

(b)     (1) Each student may borrow for at least 6 academic years.

(2) A loan may be made to a part-time student who:

            (i) Carries at least one half the normal full-time academic [work
load] WORKLOAD as determined by the college or vocational school; and

(ii) Meets any other qualifications set by the Board.

(c)      (1) (i) Subject to subparagraph (ii) of this paragraph, the scholarship
award shall be in the amount of $3,000 for use in the next ensuing academic year.

(ii) A recipient's award may not exceed the cost of attendance [as
defined in § 18-1302(g) of this title] AT THE INSTITUTION, INCLUDING:

1.       THE TUITION AND FEES APPLICABLE TO THE STUDENT;
AND

2.       THE INSTITUTION'S ESTIMATE OF OTHER EXPENSES
REASONABLY RELATED TO COST OF ATTENDANCE AT THAT INSTITUTION,
INCLUDING, WITHOUT LIMITATION, THE COST OF ROOM AND BOARD,
TRANSPORTATION, BOOKS, AND SUPPLIES.
