PARRIS N. GLENDENING, Governor J.R. 25
WHEREAS, It is appropriate that these personnel be recognized for their
outstanding and courageous service to the citizens of this State; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED BY THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF MARYLAND, That May 19,
2002 through June 14, 2002 be designated as Maryland's "Salute to the Services"; and
be it further RESOLVED, That tourism businesses across the State are encouraged to
participate in "Salute to the Services" by providing special travel-related discounts to
military, fire and emergency services, police, and hazardous material safety
personnel; and be it further RESOLVED, That the Department of Business and Economic Development's
Office of Tourism Development should take steps to market and publicize Maryland's
"Salute to the Services" and coordinate the efforts of local tourism offices throughout
the State to organize businesses and offer discounts during that period; and be it
further RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be forwarded by the Department of
Legislative Services to the Honorable Parris N. Glendening, Governor of Maryland;
the Honorable Thomas V. Mike Miller, Jr., President of the Senate of Maryland; and
the Honorable Casper R. Taylor, Jr., Speaker of the House of Delegates; and be it
further RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be forwarded by the Department of
Legislative Services to Secretary David S. Iannucci, Department of Business and
Economic Development, 217 East Redwood Street, Baltimore, Maryland 21202. Signed May 16, 2002.
Joint Resolution No. 25
(House Joint Resolution No. 19) A House Joint Resolution concerning Voting Rights Act FOR the purpose of urging Congress to amend the Voting Rights Act to ensure that
certain provisions that safeguard against extraordinary racial discrimination in
voting procedures are reauthorized. WHEREAS, Voting is the language of democracy and has proven to be one of the
most effective tools in the ongoing battle against racism in our nation; and WHEREAS, In 1965, the Voting Rights Act was passed by Congress to protect
every American against racial discrimination in voting; and WHEREAS, The Voting Rights Act is created to ensure that every person's vote
is equal, and that race should never shut any person out of the political process; and
