Chapter 183 of the Acts of 2001
SECTION 2. AND BE IT FURTHER ENACTED, That this Act shall take effect
July 1, 2001. It shall remain effective for a period of [1 year] 6 YEARS and, at the end
of June 30, [2002] 2007, with no further action required by the General Assembly, this
Act shall be abrogated and of no further force and effect.
SECTION 2. AND BE IT FURTHER ENACTED, That this Act shall take effect
June 1, 2002.

AN ACT concerning
Attorney's Lien - Settlements
FOR the purpose of providing that an attorney has a lien on certain settlements that
extends to certain attorney's fees and compensation under certain
circumstances; providing for the priority, with certain exceptions, of an
attorney's lien; providing for the application of this Act; and generally relating to
an attorney's lien for attorney's fees and compensation under certain
circumstances.

SECTION 1. BE IT ENACTED BY THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF
MARYLAND, That the Laws of Maryland read as follows:
Article - Business Occupations and Professions
10-501.
(a) Subject to subsection (b) of this section, an attorney at law has a lien on:
(1) [an] A CAUSE OF action or proceeding of a client of the attorney at
law from the time the CAUSE OF action ARISES or THE proceeding begins; and
(2) a [judgment] SETTLEMENT, JUDGMENT, or award that a client
receives as a result of legal services that the attorney at law performs.
(b) A lien under this section attaches only if, and to the extent that, under a
specific agreement between an attorney at law and a client, the client owes the
