Senate Bill No. 264 AN ACT concerning
Memorial Day - Moment of Silence Remembrance Silence FOR the purpose of requiring the Governor to each year issue a proclamation
encouraging the citizens of Maryland and certain entities to observe a moment of
silence remembrance silence at a certain time on Memorial Day to unite in
remembrance and
commemorate the acts and efforts of Marylanders who have
served and died in the United States Armed Forces. BY adding to Article - State Government
Section 13-404
Annotated Code of Maryland
(1999 Replacement Volume) Preamble WHEREAS, Memorial Day has been celebrated in this country since May 1866
as a way of honoring and remembering the sacrifices of those brave soldiers who gave
their lives in defense of their country; and WHEREAS, Memorial Day was intended as a day of personal remembrance; and WHEREAS, 62,000 Maryland men and women served their country in World
War I, 147,000 Maryland men and women served in World War II, and tens of
thousands of additional Marylanders served in the Korean, Vietnam, and Persian
Gulf and other hostile military conflicts; and WHEREAS, Nationally, 498,332 Americans died in the Civil War, 116,516
Americans died in World War I, 405,399 died in World War II, 54,246 died in Korea,
58,167 died in Vietnam, and 293 died in the Persian Gulf; and
WHEREAS, In this hectic modern age, in the midst of our constant rush, we
often fail to take the time to remember those who served our country and died while
doing so; now, therefore, SECTION 1. BE IT ENACTED BY THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF
MARYLAND, That the Laws of Maryland read as follows: Article - State Government 13-404. EACH YEAR, THE GOVERNOR SHALL ISSUE A PROCLAMATION ENCOURAGING
THE CITIZENS OF THE STATE OF MARYLAND, THE MEDIA, GOVERNMENT
DEPARTMENTS AND AGENCIES, AND BUSINESS AND RECREATIONAL FACILITIES
TO
OBSERVE A MOMENT OF SILENCE REMEMBRANCE SILENCE AT 3 2 3 P.M. ON
- 3810 -
