Annotated Code of Maryland (1999 Replacement Volume and 1999 Supplement) SECTION 1. BE IT ENACTED BY THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF
MARYLAND, That the Laws of Maryland read as follows: Article 27 - Crimes and Punishments 389. (b) [It] EXCEPT AS PROVIDED IN § 14-107(M) OF THE TRANSPORTATION
ARTICLE, IT shall be unlawful for any person knowingly to retain in his possession or
to offer for sale any manufactured article or product from which the manufacturer's
serial number has been so removed, defaced or obliterated. Article - Transportation 13- 106.1. If the vehicle identification number on a vehicle is destroyed or obliterated, the
Administration may assign a distinguishing number to the vehicle and issue to its
owner a stamped or special plate bearing the distinguishing number. The plate shall
be affixed to the vehicle in the position that the Administration determines. 14- 107. (a) (1) In this section the following words have the meanings indicated. (2) "Identification number" includes any vehicle identification number,
serial number, transmission number, federal vehicle certification label, engine
number, or other distinguishing number or mark placed on a vehicle or engine: (i) By its manufacturer; (ii) By authority of the Administration; or (iii) In accordance with the laws of the federal government or
another state or country. (3) "Remove" includes deface, cover, or destroy.
