WHEREAS, 406,000 Americans died fighting for their country during World
War II, including 6,493 residents of Maryland; and
WHEREAS, The citizens of the United States contributed and sacrificed as a
nation to support the troops abroad; and
WHEREAS, A national World War II Memorial Fund has been established to
raise money for the construction of the first World War II Memorial in the United
States; and
WHEREAS, The citizens of Maryland will have a unique opportunity to enjoy
the benefits of the Memorial, due to the close proximity of its future location,
Washington, D.C.; and
WHEREAS, The citizens of all states deserve to create a lasting reminder of
friends and family members who gave their lives in World War II so that future
generations might be free; now, therefore,
SECTION 1. BE IT ENACTED BY THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF
MARYLAND, That the Governor shall appropriate $250,000 in the State budget for
fiscal year 2001 to the Department of Veterans Affairs. The Department shall donate
the appropriation to the World War II Memorial Fund located at 2300 Clarendon
Boulevard, Suite 501, Arlington, Virginia 22201.
SECTION 2. AND BE IT FURTHER ENACTED, That this Act shall take effect
July 1, 2000.
