Dear Mr. Speaker:

In accordance with Article II, Section 17 of the Maryland Constitution, I have today
vetoed House Bill 921.

This bill repeals the June 30, 1999 sunset date on a provision of the law requiring the
Maryland Department of Transportation to provide annual grants to offset the local
costs of providing paratransit services that are complementary to fixed route service
as required under the federal Americans with Disabilities Act.

Senate Bill 247, which was passed by the General Assembly and signed by me on
April 27, 1999, accomplishes the same purpose. Therefore, it is not necessary for me
to sign House Bill 921.

AN ACT concerning

Transportation Services - Fiscal Assistance - Repeal of Termination

Provision

FOR the purpose of repealing the termination date for a certain provision of law that
requires the Department of Transportation to provide annual grants to local
jurisdictions for a certain service and to determine the grants in accordance with
certain plans and that alters the limitation on the total amount of the grants;
providing for the effective date of this Act; and generally relating to certain
fiscal assistance for certain transportation services.
