triumph of the American Revolution, and also recognizes General Bernardo de Galvez
and his men for their significant contributions and achievements in this respect; and be it
further
RESOLVED, That the General Assembly of Maryland hereby urges historians
nationwide to pursue a deeper examination and dissemination of the role played by
Hispanics in the accomplishment of American independence as well as in the
development and progress of the United States in general, and that study of these
contributions be made an integral part of the social studies and history courses taught in
the State; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be forwarded by the Department of
Legislative Reference to the Honorable Parris N. Glendening, Governor of Maryland; the
Honorable Thomas V. Mike Miller, Jr., President of the Senate of Maryland; the
Honorable Casper R. Taylor, Jr., Speaker of the House of Delegates; and Nancy S.
Grasmick, State Superintendent of Schools, 200 West Baltimore Street, Baltimore,
Maryland 21201.

A Senate Joint Resolution concerning
Commission to Study the Feasibility of Hosting the CIAA Basketball Championship in
Prince George's County
FOR the purpose of establishing a Commission to study the feasibility of hosting the
Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Basketball Championship in
Prince George's County for the tournament years 2000 through 2002.
WHEREAS, The CIAA consists of 12 historically black colleges and universities
located in North Carolina, Virginia, and Maryland (Bowie State University); and
WHEREAS, For over 50 years the CIAA has conducted a postseason basketball
tournament which has been held for the last 50 years in Virginia and North Carolina; and
WHEREAS, Winston-Salem, North Carolina has played host to the championships
since 1994 and will continue to be the host site through 1999; and
WHEREAS, The CIAA Winston-Salem Steering Committee estimates that 20,000
fans attended the 1996 championship, generating $8 million for the local economy; and
WHEREAS, The Lawrence Joel Coliseum in Winston-Salem, seats 14,500 for
basketball. If the CIAA were to hold the championship in Prince George's County, the
additional seating capacity at the USAir Arena (19,600) would allow for more fans
spending more money - approximately $12.2 million; and
