MF02.01 Family Health Services
In addition to the appropriation shown on
page 58 of the printed bill (first reading file
bill), to provide funds for addressing an
operating shortfall by increasing the
Maryland Poison Control Center's annual
grant. The General Assembly recognizes
that the Maryland Poison Control Center is
a vital public health service that manages
over 40,000 poisoning cases annually. For
25 years, the center has provided emergency
care via telephone, saving the lives of
countless Maryland citizens and preventing
the need for other more costly health care
services. Every dollar spent on poison
control services saves over $7 million in
overall health care costs. These additional
dollars help, but the lack of adequate
funding places the center at the risk of
closing. The General Assembly requests the
administration to provide a permanent
financing solution at the 1998 session.
