SECTION 3. AND BE IT FURTHER ENACTED, That this Act shall take effect
October 1, 1997.

(House Bill 937)

AN ACT concerning

Kent County - Sheriff's Salary

FOR the purpose of increasing the salary of the Sheriff of Kent County for certain
calendar years
; and and providing that this Act does not affect the salary of the
incumbent Sheriff of Kent County; and providing for a delayed effective date.

BY repealing and reenacting, with amendments,
Article - Courts and Judicial Proceedings
Section 2-309(p)
Annotated Code of Maryland
(1995 Replacement Volume and 1996 Supplement)

SECTION 1. BE IT ENACTED BY THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF
MARYLAND, That the Laws of Maryland read as follows:

Article - Courts and Judicial Proceedings

2-309.

(p) (1) (I) The Sheriff of Kent County shall receive [a salary of $35,000
$40,000 and, at] AN ANNUAL SALARY AS FOLLOWS:

1. $40,000 FOR CALENDAR YEAR 1999;

2. $41,000 FOR CALENDAR YEAR 2000;

3. $42,000 FOR CALENDAR YEAR 2001; AND

4. $43,000 FOR CALENDAR YEAR 2002 AND THEREAFTER.

(II) AT the discretion of the County Commissioners, THE SHERIFF
MAY RECEIVE
county-owned automobiles as may be necessary to operate the Sheriff's
department.

(III) The Sheriff shall appoint a chief deputy sheriff who shall receive a
salary of at least $8,000.

(IV) The Sheriff and the Sheriff's deputies shall be paid allowances as
the Commissioners may deem necessary.
