(CC) PARTICIPANT.

"PARTICIPANT" MEANS A BENEFICIARY, DESIGNATED BENEFICIARY, FORMER
MEMBER, MEMBER, OR RETIREE WHO IS OR MAY BECOME ELIGIBLE TO RECEIVE A
BENEFIT OF ANY TYPE FROM THE SEVERAL SYSTEMS.

(DD) PARTICIPATING EMPLOYER.

"PARTICIPATING EMPLOYER" MEANS THE EMPLOYER OF AN INDIVIDUAL WHO,
BECAUSE OF THE EMPLOYMENT RELATIONSHIP, IS ELIGIBLE FOR MEMBERSHIP IN A
STATE SYSTEM.                          . .

REVISOR'S NOTE: This subsection is new language derived without substantive
change from former Art. 73B, § 1-101(j).

The reference to "the employer of an individual who, because of the
employment relationship, is eligible for membership in a State system" is
substituted for the former reference to "the State of Maryland and any county
board of education, public board of library trustees, board of community
college trustees, or municipal corporation" for accuracy. The former list of
employers was incomplete.

(EE) PARTICIPATING GOVERNMENTAL UNIT.

"PARTICIPATING GOVERNMENTAL UNIT" MEANS A GOVERNMENTAL UNIT
THAT PARTICIPATES IN A STATE SYSTEM UNDER TITLE 31 OF THIS ARTICLE.

REVISOR'S NOTE: This subsection is new language added to avoid repetition of
the phrase "a governmental unit that participates in a State system under Title
31 of this article".
