CHAPTER 422
(House Bill 1316)

AN ACT concerning

Legal Holiday - Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Birthday - Federal Observance

FOR the purpose of providing that a certain State legal holiday shall be observed on a
certain date that is designated as the date of observance of the legal holiday by the
United States Congress.

BY repealing and reenacting, with amendments,
Article 1 - Rules of Interpretation
Section 27(a)

Annotated Code of Maryland
(1990 Replacement Volume and 1993 Supplement)

SECTION 1. BE IT ENACTED BY THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF
MARYLAND, That the Laws of Maryland read as follows:

Article 1 - Rules of Interpretation

27.

(a) In this Code and any rule, regulation, or directive adopted under it, "legal
holiday" means:

(1)     January 1, for New Year's Day;

(2)     January 15, for Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s birthday, UNLESS THE
UNITED STATES CONGRESS DESIGNATES ANOTHER DAY FOR OBSERVANCE OF THAT
LEGAL HOLIDAY, IN WHICH CASE, THE DAY DESIGNATED BY THE UNITED STATES
CONGRESS;

(3)     February 12, for Lincoln's birthday;

(4)     The third Monday in February, for Washington's birthday;

(5)     March 25, for Maryland Day;

(6)     Good Friday;

(7)     May 30, for Memorial Day, unless the United States Congress designates
another day for observance of that legal holiday, in which case, the day designated by the
United States Congress;

(8)     July 4, for Independence Day;

(9)     The first Monday in September, for Labor Day;
