SECTION 3. AND BE IT-FURTHER ENACTED, That this Act shall take effect
July 1, 1993 October 1, 1993 and shall apply to all distributorships in existence on or after
October 1, 1993.

AN ACT concerning

Nurse Practitioners - Authority to Prepare and Dispense Prescription Drugs

FOR the purpose of authorizing nurse practitioners to personally prepare and dispense
starter dosages of drugs and to personally prepare and dispense drugs at certain
medical facilities under certain circumstances; requiring a nurse practitioner who
personally prepares and dispenses a drug under certain circumstances to comply
with certain requirements; defining certain terms; and generally relating to the
authority of nurse practitioners to personally prepare and dispense prescription
drugs under certain circumstances.

SECTION 1. BE IT ENACTED BY THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF
MARYLAND, That the Laws of Maryland read as follows:

(A) (1) IN THIS SECTION THE FOLLOWING WORDS HAVE THE MEANINGS
INDICATED.                              

(2)      "NURSE PRACTITIONER" MEANS A REGISTERED NURSE WHO IS:

(I)      CERTIFIED AS A NURSE PRACTITIONER; AND

(II)     AUTHORIZED TO PRESCRIBE DRUGS UNDER REGULATIONS
JOINTLY ADOPTED BY THE STATE BOARD OF NURSING AND THE STATE BOARD OF
PHYSICIAN QUALITY ASSURANCE.

(3)      "STARTER DOSAGE" MEANS AN AMOUNT OF DRUG SUFFICIENT. TO
BEGIN THERAPY:

(I) OF SHORT DURATION OF 72 HOURS OR LESS; OR
