(House Bill 104)

AN ACT concerning

Queen Anne's County - Deputy Sheriffs - Repeal of Bonding Requirement

FOR the purpose of repealing a requirement that a deputy sheriff appointed by the
Sheriff of Queen Anne's County give a certain bond before assuming the duties of
office.

BY repealing and reenacting, with amendments,
Article - Courts and Judicial Proceedings
Section 2-309(s)
Annotated Code of Maryland
(1989 Replacement Volume and 1992 Supplement)

SECTION 1. BE IT ENACTED BY THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF
MARYLAND, That the Laws of Maryland read as follows:

Article - Courts and Judicial Proceedings

2-309.

(s) (1) The Sheriff of Queen Anne's County shall receive a salary set by the
County Commissioners of at least $10,000. The Sheriff shall appoint a chief deputy, at a
salary set by the County Commissioners of at least $4,500. The Sheriff may appoint the
number of assistant deputy sheriffs as the County Commissioners approve, at salaries set
by the County Commissioners of at least $4,200. The Commissioners may appoint an
assistant deputy sheriff, at a salary set by the County Commissioners of at least $4,200.

(2) The salaries are in lieu of all expenses, fees, costs, and charges, except
for the board and keeping of prisoners in the county jail and other necessary operating
expenses allowed by law or practice, including all expenses for transferring persons to and
from penal institutions, places of confinement and State institutions in the State under
sentence or order of an authority.

[(3) Before assuming the duties of the office, each deputy sheriff appointed
under this subsection shall give bond to the Sheriff in the penalty of $5,000. The
premiums of the bond shall be paid by the county.]

SECTION 2. AND BE IT FURTHER ENACTED, That this Act shall take effect
October 1, 1993.
