Ch. 602                                       LAWS OF MARYLAND

(a)  Registered nurses who graduated prior to September,
1979 from Diploma Nursing Programs or Associate Degree Nursing
Programs may validate prior learning, prior to entering a
baccalaureate nursing program, by successfully completing the
following 3 transition courses:

(1)  Scientific Concepts;

(2)  Concepts in the Social Sciences and Humanities;
and

(3)  Nursing Concepts.

(b)  The transition courses shall be taken at an institution
of higher education that has received approval from the Maryland
Higher Education Commission, in cooperation with the State Board
of examiner of nurses Nursing, to offer the transition courses.

(c)  Registered nurses selecting the option under subsection
(a) of this Act may not substitute other credits or challenge
examinations in place of the transition courses.

(d)  All transition courses shall be completed successfully
before a registered nurse may begin the senior level
baccalaureate nursing courses with 60 credits awarded as
challenge grants.

(e)  Anyone taking advantage of this option must enter a BSN
program within 2 years of completion of the transition courses
and must complete the remaining 64 credits for the BSN within 6
years.

SECTION 2. AND BE IT FURTHER ENACTED, That this Act shall
take effect July 1, 1989. It shall remain effective until
September, 1994 and, at the end of September 1, 1994, and with no
further action required by the General Assembly, this Act shall
be void and of no effect.
