program in an area in which there is a critical shortage of
teachers;
(4) Furnish a surety bond to this State with security
satisfactory to the Administration, that upon completion of
undergraduate studies if not a teacher, or completion of
certification studies if already a teacher, the recipient shall
teach in this State for 1 1/2 years for each year that the
recipient has a FULL-TIME tuition assistance award OR 1 YEAR FOR
EACH YEAR THAT THE RECIPIENT HAS A PART-TIME TUITION ASSISTANCE
AWARD;
(5) Maintain a grade point average of at least 3.0 on
a 4.0 scale and advance in academic standing at least 1 year in
each year in which an award is renewed; and
(6) Satisfy whatever other criteria the
Administration and the State Board of Education establish.
(c) This subtitle precludes the recipient of tuition
assistance from receiving other forms of State sponsored
financial assistance. Awards to teacher recipients may not be
used to supplant retraining efforts by local boards of education.
(d) The (1) FOR A FULL-TIME STUDENT, THE annual amount of
tuition assistance shall be equal to the cost of tuition,
mandatory fees, and room and board, not to exceed the lesser of
costs incurred for the program required for teacher certification
in a field of critical shortage or the sum of these costs for a
full-time undergraduate IN-STATE resident student at the
University of Maryland, College Park.
(2) FOR A PART-TIME STUDENT, THE AMOUNT OF AN AWARD
MAY NOT EXCEED THE APPLICABLE COST OF TUITION AND MANDATORY FEES
FOR A COMPARABLE UNDERGRADUATE IN-STATE STUDENT AT THE UNIVERSITY
OF MARYLAND, COLLEGE PARK.
(e) (1) A nondegreed recipient may renew an award for one
year if the recipient:
(i) Remains [a full-time] AN undergraduate
STUDENT in an area of critical shortage; and
(ii) Maintains a grade point average of at
least 3.0 on a 4.0 scale and advances in academic standing at
least 1 year for each year for which an award is renewed.
(2) A degreed recipient and a teacher recipient may
renew an award for 1 year if that recipient maintains a grade
point average of at least 3.0 on a 4.0 scale.
