SECTION 1. BE IT ENACTED BY THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF
MARYLAND, That the Laws of Maryland read as follows:
Article 10 - Attorneys at Law and Attorneys in Fact
40.
(t) In Somerset County, (1) the State's Attorney's salary
is [$24,000] $57,000 $60,000.
(2) The State's Attorney's allowance for the expenses
of his office is $3,000.
(3) (2) THE STATE'S ATTORNEY MAY NOT ENGAGE IN THE
PRIVATE PRACTICE OF LAW AT ANY TIME IN ANY JURISDICTION DURING
THE STATE'S ATTORNEY'S TENURE OF OFFICE.
(4) (3) The State's Attorney may appoint one or more
assistants at a salary set by the County Commissioners.
(5) (4) THE STATE'S ATTORNEY MAY HIRE AN INVESTIGATOR
OR INVESTIGATORS FOR WHICH PROVISION IS MADE IN THE ANNUAL COUNTY
BUDGET.
SECTION 2. AND BE IT FURTHER ENACTED, That, pursuant to
Article III, § 35 of the Constitution of Maryland, this Act may
not be construed to extend or apply to the salary, compensation,
and prohibition on the private practice of law of the State's
Attorney for Somerset County in office on the effective date of
this Act, but the provisions of this Act concerning the salary,
compensation, and prohibition on the private practice of law of
the State's Attorney for Somerset County shall take effect at the
beginning of the next following term of office.
SECTION 3. AND BE IT FURTHER ENACTED, That this Act shall
take effect July 1, 1989.
