LAWS OF MARYLAND

[(i)](J) Sale and installation of smoke detection systems
and specialized smoke detectors for the deaf and hearing impaired
shall be in accordance with State of Maryland Fire Prevention
Code regulations.

[(j)](K) Approval shall be obtained from the State Fire
Marshal by every manufacturer commercially selling or offering
for sale smoke detection systems in the State. Application for
such approval of each model shall be in the manner prescribed by
the State Fire Marshal and shall be accompanied by a fee of $25.

[(k) An approved automatic fire sprinkler system may be
installed in lieu of a smoke detection system when approved by
the Fire Prevention Commission. This option shall not nullify any
other requirements of the code nor be construed as exempting any
occupancy from such requirements where clearly applicable under
the text of the code.]

(1) Notwithstanding any other provisions of this article,
the provisions of this section shall apply in Baltimore City. In
the city, the city fire department shall enforce these provisions
and any appeals concerning these provisions shall be made to the
city fire board.

(m) These provisions THE PROVISIONS OF SUBSECTIONS (A)
THROUGH (L) OF THIS SECTION shall have no effect upon the
existing public local laws or regulations as of July 1, 1982
which require smoke detectors in occupancies with less than ten
dwelling units.

(N) A MINIMUM OF 1 SMOKE DETECTOR SHALL BE INSTALLED ON
EACH LEVEL, INCLUDING A BASEMENT, BUT EXCLUDING AN ATTIC, OF ALL
DWELLING UNITS:

(1) CONTAINING ALTERNATING CURRENT (AC) ELECTRICAL
SERVICE;

(1) (2) CLASSIFIED RESIDENTIAL AS DEFINED IN THE
NATIONAL FIRE PROTECTION ASSOCIATION LIFE SAFETY CODE, 1985
EDITION; AND

(2) (3) FOR WHICH A BUILDING PERMIT IS ISSUED FOR
CONSTRUCTION OF NEW RESIDENTIAL DWELLING UNITS ON OR AFTER
JANUARY 1, 1989.

(O) IF 2 OR MORE SMOKE DETECTORS ARE REQUIRED UNDER
SUBSECTION (N) OF THIS SECTION, THE SMOKE DETECTORS SHALL BE OF A
TYPE AND INSTALLED IN A MANNER SO THAT ACTIVATION OF ANY 1 SMOKE
DETECTOR CAUSES ACTIVATION OF ALL OTHER REQUIRED SMOKE DETECTORS
IN THE RESIDENTIAL DWELLING UNIT.

(P) THE PROVISIONS OF SUBSECTIONS (N) AND (O) OF THIS
