WILLIAM DONALD SCHAEFER, Governor Ch. 246

(1) "Institution" means any public or private nonprofit
educational institution situated within this State which:

(1)  Provides a program of education beyond the high
school level;

(2)  Awards an associate's, bachelor's, or advanced
degree;

(3)  Is accredited by the Commission on Higher
Education of the Middle States Association of Colleges and
Schools or by a national accrediting association or group
recognized by the Council on Postsecondary Accreditation; and

(4)  Meets the conditions of § [12-203] 11-302 of
[the Education] THIS Article [of the Maryland Code].

18-1401.

(c) "Eligible institution" means an accredited     college or

university that has a program of undergraduate     or graduate

studies that would certify the recipient to teach in     this State
in an area of critical shortage and which is:

(1)  Authorized by the [State Board for] MARYLAND
Higher Education COMMISSION; and

(2)  Approved by the State Board of Education.
18-1402.

(a)  There is a program of teacher education tuition
assistance in this State known as the Sharon Christa McAuliffe
Memorial Teacher Education Tuition Assistance Program.

(b)  The recipient of a teacher education tuition assistance
award shall use the award at an eligible institution.

(c)  The State Scholarship [Board] ADMINISTRATION COMMISSION
ADMINISTRATION may adopt rules and regulations that establish:

(1)  Procedures for applications and renewals of
tuition assistance; and

(2)  Requirements that a tuition assistance recipient
provide to the State adequate financial security to assure
compliance with the teaching obligation mandated by this
subtitle.

(d)  The State Board of Education may adopt rules and
regulations to determine academic criteria for selection of
tuition assistance recipients from eligible applicants.
