(5) A motor bus as defined in subsection (g) of this
section.] ANY MOTOR VEHICLE USED OR MAINTAINED FOR THE
TRANSPORTATION OF PERSONS OR PROPERTY THAT:
(1) HAS 2 AXLES AND AN OPERATING OR REGISTERED GROSS
VEHICLE WEIGHT THAT EXCEEDS 26,000 POUNDS;
(2) HAS 3 OR MORE AXLES; OR
(3) IS USED IN COMBINATION WITH ANOTHER VEHICLE AND
HAS AN OPERATING OR REGISTERED GROSS COMBINATION WEIGHT THAT
EXCEEDS 26,000 POUNDS.
423.
(a)[(l)] All motor carriers shall obtain an
identification marker for each of their commercial vehicles from
the Comptroller on an annual basis for the period beginning
January 1 of each year and expiring December 31 of each year.
The identification marker shall be displayed in accordance with
regulations promulgated by the Comptroller. The identification
marker shall remain the property of the State of Maryland and may
be recalled for any violation of the provisions of this subtitle
or of the regulations adopted under this subtitle. [Except as
provided in paragraph (2) of this subsection, the] THE AFTER
JULY 1, 1988, THE fee for the issuance of an identification
marker is [$25.00] $5 $7 per commercial motor vehicle.
[{2) The FOR 1988, THE fee for the issuance of an
identification marker is $10 per motor bus.]
(b) A vehicle shall not be considered in violation of the
provisions of this section until January 15 of each year,
provided that the motor carrier was registered in accordance with
the provisions in effect during the preceding registration year.

(a) Nothing in the subtitle shall apply to any commercial
vehicle or vehicles operated by any state or subdivision thereof,
the United States or any agency of two or more states or of
states and the United States in which this State participates; or
to any school bus as defined by the laws of this State operated
by, for or on behalf of a state, any subdivision thereof, or any
private or privately operated school or schools; or to any fire
or rescue vehicle operated by any paid or volunteer fire company
or department or rescue squad.
(b) Nothing in this subtitle applies to any commercial
vehicle or vehicles being road tested for sale by a dealer
licensed in Maryland, provided the vehicle displays dealers'
registration plates issued by the Motor Vehicle Administration.
