22.02.00.01 General Administration

General Fund Appropriation.........                                        999,548

It is the intent of the Budget
Committees that the Office of the
Public Defender cease handling
Child in Need of Assistance cases
and the Prisoner Assistance

Program. Unless the Budget

Committees expressly approve
otherwise, the Office of the
Public Defender is required to
work with the Department of
Budget and Fiscal Planning to
transfer funding and other

necessary resources to the

Department of Human Resources to

handle Child in Need of

Assistance cases and the

Department of Public Safety and
Correctional Services to handle

civil suits arising from

conditions of prison confinement.
The transfers of functions shall
be completed by November 1, 1987.
In addition, the Department of
Budget and Fiscal Planning shall
complete, with in-house staff and

existing resources, a

comprehensive management audit of
the Office of the Public Defender
by December 1, 1987.

22.02.00.02 District Operations

General Fund Appropriation,
provided that $500,000 of this

appropriation, made for the

purpose of panel attorney fees
may not be expended until

It is the intent of the Budget
Committees that the Office of the

Public Defender demonstrates

demonstrate improvement in

recovery of legal fees to the
Budget Committees. The office
shall submit a report for the
review and approval of the Budget
