A House Joint Resolution concerning
Chlordane as a Pesticide
and Related Cyclodiene Pesticides
FOR the purpose of requesting the Governor to establish a Task
Force to study the use of chlordane as a pesticide and
related cyclodiene pesticides.
WHEREAS, The chemical chlordane, a pesticide, is and related
cyclodine pesticides are widely used by the pesticide industry as
an exterminant for termites in homes; and
WHEREAS, The effects of chlordane and related cyclodiene
pesticides are known to be extremely toxic and harmful to human
beings; and
WHEREAS, the toxic effects of chlordane and related
cyclodiene pesticides are long lasting and may continue to be
potentially harmful to humans over an extended period of time;
now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED BY THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF MARYLAND, That the
Governor is requested to establish a Task Force to study the use
of the chemical chlordane as a pesticide and related cyclodiene
pesticides in private residences, the long term health effects
that are caused by the use of chlordane as a pesticide and
related cyclodiene pesticides, the proper ways to use chlordane
safely as a pesticide and related cyclodiene pesticides safely,
the problems associated with applying chlordane and related
cyclodiene pesticides safely, and associated health risks of the
use of chlordane as a pesticide and related cyclodiene
pesticides; and be it further
RESOLVED, That the Task Force be composed of:
(1) 2 members of the House of Delegates, appointed by
the Speaker of the House, and 2 members of the Senate of
Maryland, appointed by the President of the Senate; and
(2) a representative of the Office of Environmental
Programs of the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene,
appointed by the Governor; and
