CHAPTER 697

(House Bill 1106)

AN ACT concerning

Firefighters, Emergency Medical Technicians, and
Rescue Squadmen - Exposure to Disease

FOR the purpose of clarifying that while treating or transporting
certain patients to a medical care facility, if a paid or
volunteer firefighter or emergency medical technician comes
into contact with patients having a contagious disease, the
attending physician shall notify the firefighter or medical
technician; clarifying the definition of contagious disease;
clarifying that notice shall include subsequent written
confirmation of possible exposure to the contagious disease;
requiring notification be conducted in a manner that will
protect the confidentiality of certain persons; clarifying
that the written confirmation constitutes compliance with
this Act; requiring each medical care facility to develop
written procedures for the implementation of this Act;
clarifying certain language; and generally relating to the
notification of the firefighters and emergency medical
technicians who transport persons who have contagious
diseases.

BY repealing and reenacting, with amendments,

SECTION 1. BE IT ENACTED BY THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF
MARYLAND, That the Laws of Maryland read as follows:

Article - Health - General

18-213.

(a) In this section "contagious disease" means:

(1)   [Hepatitis] HEPATITIS B;

(2)  [Meningitis] MENINGOCOCCAL MENINGITIS;

(3)  Tuberculosis;

(4)  Malaria;

(5)  Rabies; or
