from which projections can be made about the Alzheimer's
population in the rest of the State; now, therefore,
SECTION 1. BE IT ENACTED BY THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF
MARYLAND, That the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene shall
conduct, using existing data, a demographic, epidemiologic, and
health services data study of the prevalence and incidence of
Alzheimer's disease and related disorders that affect individuals
in this State.
SECTION 2. AND BE IT FURTHER ENACTED, That the Department
of Health and Mental Hygiene shall use the 1979 study by Dr.
Morton Kramer of Johns Hopkins Hospital in East Baltimore as a
basis for the statewide study under Section 1 of this Act.
SECTION 3 2. AND BE IT FURTHER ENACTED, That the
Department shall report its findings on the status of the study
to the Governor and, subject to § 2-1312(b) of the State
Government Article, to the General Assembly when completed, but
not later than January 1, 1987. by January 1, 1987. The
Department shall deliver its final report of its findings to the
Governor and the General Assembly by December 1, 1987.
SECTION 4 3. AND BE IT FURTHER ENACTED, That this Act
shall take effect July 1, 1986.

AN ACT concerning
Insurance - Alzheimer's Disease and Elderly Care
FOR the purpose of requiring certain group or individual
contracts, certificates, or policies issued or delivered by
a health insurer, including a profit, nonprofit, or blanket
health insurer, to include benefits for expenses arising
from the care of victims of dementia; requiring a health
insurer, including a profit, nonprofit, or blanket health
insurer, to renew or modify certain existing contracts,
certificates, or policies nonprofit health service plans and
health insurers proposing to issue or deliver certain group
contracts or policies in this State to offer the option of
providing benefits for expenses arising from the care of
victims of dementia; defining a certain term Alzheimer's
