SECTION 1. BE IT ENACTED BY THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF
MARYLAND, That the Laws of Maryland read as follows:

(u) (1) (I) The Sheriff of Somerset County shall receive a
salary of not less than [$16,000] $18,500 . and no expense
allowance.
(II) SUBSEQUENT TO 1986, THE COUNTY
COMMISSIONERS SHALL SET THE SALARY FOR THE ENSUING TERMS OF
OFFICE, BUT IT MAY NOT BE LESS THAN $20,000.
(III) (II) He shall appoint a chief deputy who
shall receive a salary of not less than $7,500.
(IV) (III) Subject to the approval of the
County Commissioners, the Sheriff may appoint additional deputies
at the compensation set by the County Commissioners prior to any
appointment.
(V) (IV) The Sheriff or one of his deputies
shall act as county jailer and shall receive annual total
compensation of not less than $6,000.
(2) The Sheriff and his deputies may wear uniforms
when performing their official duties, and the automobiles used
by the Sheriff's office shall be equipped with a two-way radio.
(3) The County Commissioners may pay for the
uniforms, radios, automobiles, and operating expenses of the
automobiles of the Sheriff's office.
SECTION 2. AND BE IT FURTHER ENACTED, That, pursuant to
Article III, § 35, of the Constitution of Maryland, this Act may
not be construed to extend or apply to the salary or compensation
of the Sheriff of Somerset County in office on the effective date
of this Act, but the provisions of this Act concerning the salary
or compensation of the Sheriff of Somerset County shall take
effect at the beginning of the next following term of office.
SECTION 3. AND BE IT FURTHER ENACTED, That this Act shall
take effect July 1, 1985.
