(c) (1) Anne Arundel County, [Howard County,] Prince
George's County, and Kent County, shall secure compensation to
volunteer firemen and volunteer rescue squadmen, or to their
dependents in the case of death, by means of insurance in the
State Accident Fund, or in any private stock company or mutual
association licensed to provide such insurance.
(2) The [County Council of Howard County and the]
County Commissioners of Kent County shall levy annually a tax
upon the assessable property of their [respective counties]
COUNTY sufficient to pay for the required insurance.
(3) [Membership in volunteer fire companies in Howard
County is limited as follows: Company 1, Elkridge, 60 members;
Company 2, Ellicott City, 75 members; Company 3, West Friendship,
50 members; Company 4, Lisbon, 75 members; Company 5,
Clarksville, 75 members; and Company 6, Savage, 60 members. Only
actively participating members are covered by this section.]
(I) IN HOWARD COUNTY, THIS SECTION SHALL APPLY
ONLY TO ACTIVELY PARTICIPATING VOLUNTEER FIRE FIGHTERS AND
VOLUNTEER MEMBERS OF RESCUE SQUADS.
(II) HOWARD COUNTY SHALL SECURE WORKMEN'S
COMPENSATION TO VOLUNTEER FIRE FIGHTERS AND VOLUNTEER RESCUE
SQUAD MEMBERS THROUGH ANY METHOD ALLOWED UNDER SECTION 16 OF THIS
ARTICLE.
(4) Only actively participating members are covered
by this section. The County Commissioners of Kent County may set
a ceiling on the number of members that any volunteer fire
company and any rescue squad in Kent County may have.
(5) The County Council of Prince George's County
shall appropriate and pay over annually to each volunteer fire
company or rescue squad funds equal to 100 percent of the cost to
each company or squad of the required insurance, and each company
or squad shall use these funds to pay for the required insurance.
SECTION 2. AND BE IT FURTHER ENACTED, That this Act shall
take effect July 1, 1984.
