AN ACT concerning
Maryland State Police - Commissioned Ranks
FOR the purpose of altering the definition of "commissioned
rank"; deleting language referring to certain obsolete
ranks; replacing the rank of sergeant major with that of
second lieutenant; and clarifying rank VII by specifying
"first lieutenant".
BY repealing and reenacting, with amendments,

Section 2(b) and 23(a)

SECTION 1. BE IT ENACTED BY THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF
MARYLAND, That the Laws of Maryland read as follows:
Article 88B - State Police

The following words shall have the meanings contained in
this section unless the context manifestly indicates a different
meaning:
(b) "Commissioned rank" means any of the [four] 5 highest
ranks within the Department. "Noncommissioned rank" means any
other rank. Neither term includes the Superintendent.
23.
(a) The Superintendent of the Maryland State Police shall
develop a salary plan for police employees which shall include
such ranks and grades within ranks as he deems appropriate. The
plan shall be effective upon approval by the Secretary of Public
Safety and Correctional Services if sufficient funds therefor are
included in the State budget. No person who is a police employee
on July 1, 1974, shall be demoted or otherwise affected in rank,
pay or status except for cause as hereinbefore required; and all
such police employees shall continue in the rank and salary step
which they then hold, that is to say: troopers are within rank I;
troopers first class within rank II; corporals within rank III;
sergeants within rank IV; first sergeants, detective sergeants,
[quartermaster sergeants,] and sergeants mechanic within rank V;
[sergeants major] SECOND LIEUTENANTS and the examining physician
within rank VI; FIRST lieutenants within rank VII; captains
