AN ACT concerning

Unemployment Insurance Law - Amateur Sports Officials

FOR the purpose of excluding from the definition of employment
under the State Unemployment Insurance Law any service
performed in an amateur athletic contest by a referee,
umpire, linesman, or other official on a per game fee basis
for a nonprofit an association of referees, umpires,
linesmen, or other officials, if the performing official is
made aware and understands before performing the service
that the service is not covered employment; and providing
that this Act be applied retroactively.

Section 20(g)(8)(xx)

SECTION 1. BE IT ENACTED BY THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF
MARYLAND, That the Laws of Maryland read as follows:

Article 95A - Unemployment Insurance Law

20.

As used in this article, unless the context clearly requires
otherwise:

(g) (8) "Employment" does not include:

(XX) SERVICE PERFORMED IN AN AMATEUR ATHLETIC
CONTEST BY A REFEREE, UMPIRE, LINESMAN, OR OTHER OFFICIAL ON A
PER GAME FEE BASIS FOR A NONPROFIT AN ASSOCIATION OF REFEREES,
UMPIRES, LINESMEN, OR OTHER OFFICIALS, IF THE PERFORMING OFFICIAL
IS MADE AWARD AND UNDERSTANDS BEFORE PERFORMING THE SERVICE THAT
THE SERVICE IS NOT COVERED EMPLOYMENT.

SECTION 2. AND BE IT FURTHER ENACTED, That this Act shall
be applied retroactively.

shall take effect July 1, 1984.
