AN ACT concerning

Higher Education - Student Financial Assistance - Scholarships

FOR the purpose of establishing "The Edward T. Conroy Memorial
Scholarship Program"; providing for certain requirements for
certain students applying for scholarship awards under this
program; authorizing the State Scholarship Board to accept
gifts for the program and to use these gifts for needy
students; providing for a special account for any gifts that
the State Scholarship Board receives; and generally relating
to "The Edward T. Conroy Memorial Scholarship Program".

BY repealing and reenacting, with amendments,

SECTION 1. BE IT ENACTED BY THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF
MARYLAND, That the Laws of Maryland read as follows:

Article - Education

18-603.

(a)   In this section "child" means a legitimate child, an
adopted child, or INCLUDES a stepchild.

(b)  There is a program of scholarships that are awarded
under this section.

(C) THE PROGRAM IS THE EDWARD T. CONROY MEMORIAL
SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM.

[(c)] (D) (1) A child may apply to the State Scholarship
Board for a scholarship under this section if his parent was a
member of the armed forces and the parent was a resident of this
State at the time the parent:

(i) Died or was totally and permanently
disabled as a result of military service after December 7, 1941;
or

(ii) Was declared to be a prisoner of war or
missing in action, if that occurred on or after January 1, 1960
as a result of the Vietnam conflict, and if the child was born
prior to or while the parent was a prisoner of war or missing in
action.
