FOR the purpose of allowing certain State employees to use
vacation leave, sick leave, compensatory leave, or personal
leave as maternity or adoption leave; defining certain
terms; allowing certain State employees to appeal to the
Secretary of Personnel for extensions of maternity or
adoption leave; and generally relating to leave for
employees of the State.

SECTION 1. BE IT ENACTED BY THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF
MARYLAND, That the Laws of Maryland read as follows:
Article 64A - Merit System
37.
(I)(1)(I) IN THIS SUBSECTION THE FOLLOWING WORDS HAVE THE
MEANINGS INDICATED.
(II) "MATERNITY LEAVE" MEANS THE LEAVE THAT IS
AVAILABLE TO AN EMPLOYEE FOR THE BIRTH OF THE EMPLOYEE'S CHILD.
(III) "ADOPTION LEAVE" MEANS THE LEAVE THAT IS
AVAILABLE TO AN EMPLOYEE FOR THE ADOPTION OF THE EMPLOYEE'S
CHILD.
(2) NOTWITHSTANDING ANY OTHER PROVISION OF THIS
ARTICLE, AN EMPLOYEE, WITH THE APPROVAL OF THE HEAD OF THE
EMPLOYEE'S DEPARTMENT OR AGENCY, MAY:

a certain amount of sick leave as adoption leave; defining
the term "adoption leave"; and generally relating to
adoption leave for State employees.
