CHAPTER 301

(Senate Bill 54)

AN ACT concerning

Vehicle Laws - Use of Warning Lights

FOR the purpose of altering a provision of law relating to the
use of warning lights by slow moving vehicles, to require
that warning lights be used by the operator of certain
vehicles under certain circumstances.

BY repealing and reenacting, with amendments,

Section 22-221(f)
Annotated Code of Maryland
(1977 Volume and 1983 Supplement)

SECTION 1. BE IT ENACTED BY THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF
MARYLAND, That the Laws of Maryland read as follows:

Article - Transportation

22-221.

(f) (1) Warning lamps [may] SHALL be used by the
operator of any vehicle when the posted speed limit is in excess
of 45 miles per hour and the vehicle is traveling at least 20
miles per hour under the posted speed limit, PROVIDED THAT THE
WARNING LAMPS SHALL BE USED WHEN REQUIRED BY PARAGRAPH (2) OF
THIS SUBSECTION.

(2) (I) THE OPERATOR OF ANY COMMERCIAL VEHICLE AS

DEFINED IN § 412(B) OF ARTICLE 81 SHALL USE WARNING LAMPS WHEN

THE POSTED SPEED LIMIT IS IN EXCESS OF 45 MILES PER HOUR AND THE
VEHICLE IS TRAVELING AT LEAST 20 MILES PER HOUR UNDER THE POSTED
SPEED LIMIT.

(II) THIS PARAGRAPH DOES NOT APPLY:

(1) WITHIN ANY BUSINESS OR RESIDENTIAL
DISTRICT;

(2) WHENEVER A VEHICLE IS SLOWING OR
STOPPING IN LAWFUL RESPONSE TO A TRAFFIC CONTROL DEVICE OR IN
RESPONSE TO TRAFFIC CONDITIONS; OR

(3) TO ANY VEHICLE WHICH IS NOT EQUIPPED
WITH WARNING LAMPS.
