In subsection (b)(3) of this section, the former
clause "[a]pproval by the General Assembly or its
presiding officers, as provided in this section, is
not required if", is deleted as surplusage.

Article 19 - Comptroller

8.

[He may employ clerks, assistants and other help, in such
numbers and at such salaries as may be provided for by the budget
of appropriations, all of whom shall perform such duties as may
be assigned to them from time to time by the Comptroller. He may
designate one of his clerks or assistants as chief deputy
comptroller and such number of other clerks and/or assistants as
he may deem necessary as deputy comptrollers. The chief deputy
comptroller or each deputy comptroller shall, upon entering the
duties of their respective offices, be covered by surety bonds in
accordance with the provisions of §§ 46 through 50 of Article 78A
of the Annotated Code of Maryland.] The chief deputy comptroller
and each deputy comptroller [upon his designation and
qualification as above provided, shall have power to] MAY grant
all warrants for money to be paid out of the treasury, in
pursuance of appropriations by law and countersign all checks
drawn by the Treasurer upon any bank or banks in which the monies
of the State may from time to time be deposited, subject to all
the limitations imposed by law upon the Comptroller in granting
such warrants and the countersigning of such checks. [The chief
deputy comptroller and each other deputy comptroller shall act as
such only during the pleasure of the Comptroller, and the power
to act as such chief deputy comptroller or deputy comptroller may
be terminated at any time by the Comptroller for any cause which
he may deem sufficient. In the event of sickness or absence of
the Comptroller, the power of the chief deputy comptroller or any
deputy comptroller to grant warrants and countersign checks may
be terminated by the Board of Public Works or a majority of its
members for any cause which they may deem sufficient. The
termination of the power of the chief deputy and/or any other
deputy comptroller to grant warrants and to countersign checks
shall not of itself operate to terminate his employment as clerk,
assistant, or other employee. Whenever the powers of any person
to act as chief deputy comptroller or deputy comptroller are
terminated as herein provided, the Comptroller may designate some
other clerk or assistant to act as such chief deputy comptroller
or deputy comptroller, subject to the limitations and conditions
above prescribed.]

REVISOR'S NOTE: Ch. ____, Acts of 1984, which enacted the

State Government Article, also amended this section to
delete the former first through third and fifth
through eighth sentences and to make stylistic
changes.
