by the Sheriff at any time or by the Circuit Court for Howard County upon indictment
and conviction as provided by law. The Sheriff may appoint additional temporary
deputy sheriffs when necessary for the public safety and the county government shall
allow them reasonable compensation. These deputies may not serve longer than the
case actually requires.
(2) The primary duties of the Sheriff are the following:
(i) The security of the circuit court, and the performance of such
duties as may be required of them by that court;
(ii) The service of process of writs, summonses, orders, petitions,
subpoenas, warrants, orders to show cause, and other legal papers; and
(iii) Additional duties, including law enforcement as may be
requested by law enforcement or other criminal justice agencies, the circuit court, or
the county government, when necessary for the public safety.
SECTION 2. AND BE IT FURTHER ENACTED, That, pursuant to Article III, §
35 of the Maryland Constitution, this Act may not be construed to extend or apply to
the salary or compensation of the Sheriff of Howard County in office on the effective
date of this Act, but the provisions of this Act concerning the salary or compensation
of the Sheriff of Howard County shall take effect at the beginning of the next
following term of office.
SECTION 3. AND BE IT FURTHER ENACTED, That this Act shall take effect
October 1, 2005.

CHAPTER 213
(House Bill 465)
AN ACT concerning
Natural Resources - Forest or Park Reserve Fund - Payments to Counties
FOR the purpose of altering certain provisions relating to annual payments made to
counties from the State Forest or Park Reserve Fund to require the Department
of Natural Resources to pay counties a certain percentage of the gross revenue
derived from the State forest or park reserve located in the county; making this
Act an emergency measure; and generally relating to the Forest or Park Reserve
Fund.
