SECTION 1. BE IT ENACTED BY THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF
MARYLAND, That the Laws of Maryland read as follows:
Article - Courts and Judicial Proceedings
2-309.
(n) (1) The Sheriff of Harford County shall receive a salary of:
(i) [$70,000 beginning December 1, 1998;
(ii) $72,000 in 2000;
(iii) $74,000 in 2001;
(iv) $76,000 in 2002;
(v) $84,000 in 2003; and
(vi)] $90,000 in 2004 [and thereafter];
(II) $98,500 COMMENCING IN 2006 JANUARY 1, 2007, THEREAFTER
TO BE ADJUSTED ANNUALLY ON JULY 1 IN ACCORDANCE WITH SUBPARAGRAPH (III)
OF THIS PARAGRAPH.
(III) 1. ON AND AFTER JULY 1, 2006 2007, THE ANNUAL SALARY OF
THE SHERIFF OF HARFORD COUNTY SHALL BE ADJUSTED ANNUALLY TO REFLECT
THE ANNUAL CHANGE IN THE "CONSUMER PRICE INDEX" FOR "ALL URBAN
CONSUMERS" FOR THE EXPENDITURE CATEGORY "ALL ITEMS NOT SEASONALLY
ADJUSTED", AND FOR ALL REGIONS, THE ANNUAL CONSUMER PRICE INDEX FOR THE
PERIOD ENDING EACH DECEMBER, AS PUBLISHED BY THE BUREAU OF LABOR
STATISTICS OF THE U.S. DEPARTMENT OF LABOR, SHALL BE USED TO ADJUST THE
ANNUAL SALARY OF THE SHERIFF OF HARFORD COUNTY WHILE IN OFFICE.
2. NOTWITHSTANDING ITEM SUBSUBPARAGRAPH 1 OF THIS
SUBPARAGRAPH, THE ADJUSTMENT TO THE ANNUAL SALARY OF THE SHERIFF OF
HARFORD COUNTY MAY NOT EXCEED 3 PERCENT IN ANY FISCAL YEAR
SECTION 2. AND BE IT FURTHER ENACTED, That, pursuant to Article III, §
35 of the Maryland Constitution, this Act may not be construed to extend or apply to
the salary or compensation of the Sheriff of Harford County in office on the effective
date of this Act, but the provisions of this Act concerning the salary or compensation
of the Sheriff of Harford County shall take effect at the beginning of the next
following term of office.
