Ch. 104                                    2006 LAWS OF MARYLAND CHAPTER 104
(House Bill 1066) AN ACT concerning Washington County - Deputy Sheriffs FOR the purpose of altering the period of time that Washington County deputy
sheriffs are required to be placed on a probationary status; altering the rank
that Washington County deputy sheriffs are required to attain in order to have
certain tenure; and generally relating to the probationary period for Washington
County deputy sheriffs. BY repealing and reenacting, with amendments,

Annotated Code of Maryland
(2002 Replacement Volume and 2005 Supplement) SECTION 1. BE IT ENACTED BY THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF
MARYLAND, That the Laws of Maryland read as follows: Article - Courts and Judicial Proceedings 2-309. (w) (1) (I) The Sheriff of Washington County shall receive a salary of
$80,000. (II)     The Sheriff shall appoint a chief deputy at a salary level set by
the County Commissioners. (III)   The Sheriff may appoint deputy sheriffs and other personnel
necessary to perform the duties of office at salary levels set by the County
Commissioners in accordance with the county's budgetary process. (2) (I) Any deputy sheriff appointed according to this [section]
SUBSECTION shall be placed on a probationary status for the first [year] TWO YEARS
of his employment, and may be dismissed by the Sheriff for any reason during that
probationary period. (II) At the conclusion of [twelve months'] continuous employment
FOR TWO YEARS, a deputy sheriff having the rank of [lieutenant] MAJOR or below
has tenure, and may be discharged by the Sheriff only for misfeasance, malfeasance,
nonfeasance, or insubordination in office. SECTION 2. AND BE IT FURTHER ENACTED, That this Act shall take effect
October 1, 2006. Approved April 11, 2006.
