(v) one member of a local board of education representing a school
with high dropout rates in the State; and
(vi) one representative of the University System of Maryland.
(e) The Governor shall designate the chair of the Task Force.
(d) The Department of Education shall provide staff for the Task Force,
(e) A member of the Task Force:
(1) may not receive compensation as a member of the Task Force; but
(2) is entitled to reimbursement for expenses under the Standard State
Travel Regulations, as provided in the State budget.
(f) The Task Force shall:
(1) study and make recommendations concerning the advantages and
costs of requiring compulsory school attendance for children between the ages of 15
and 18 years old;
(2) study the number of students at least 16 years old and under the age
of 18 who dropped out of high school, broken down by year and socioeconomic status:
(3) study the number of students at least 16 years old and under the age
of 18 who had contact with the juvenile justice system, broken down by age and the
reason for the contact, if available: and
(4) study and make recommendations concerning any other issues the
Task Force determines relevant to whether the age range for compulsory school
attendance should be extended to 18 years old.
(g) On or before June 30, 2007, the Task Force shall report its findings and
recommendations to the Governor and, in accordance with § 2-1246 of the State
Government Article, the General Assembly.
(a) There is a Task Force to Study Raising the Compulsory Public School
Attendance Age to 18.
(b) The Task Force shall consist of the following members;
(1) One member of the Senate of Maryland, appointed by the President of
the Senate;
(2) One member of the House of Delegates of Maryland, appointed by the
Speaker of the House;
(3) The State Superintendent of Schools, or the State Superintendent's
designee;
(4) The Secretary of Juvenile Justice, or the Secretary's designee;
(5) The following members selected by the Governor;
