MESSAGE FROM THE CHIEF EXECUTIVE
May 31, 1983
The Honorable Benjamin L. Cardin
Speaker of the House of Delegates
State House
Annapolis, Maryland 21404
Dear Mr. Speaker:
In accordance with Article II, Section 17 of the Maryland
Constitution, I have today vetoed House Bill 226.
This bill exempts from the State's sales tax, sales of
diesel fuel used in the reclamation of land which has been mined
for coal by means of strip mining or open-pit mining.
Senate Bill 89, which was passed by the General Assembly and
signed by me on May 31, 1983, accomplishes the same purpose.
Therefore it is not necessary for me to sign House Bill 226.

Sincerely,
Harry Hughes
Governor
