AN ACT concerning
Smoke Detection Systems - Multifamily Buildings and Hotels
FOR the purpose of repealing the provision that excluded certain
hotels and multifamily buildings from the smoke detection
systems provisions; and requiring by a certain date the
installation of smoke detectors in certain multifamily
buildings and hotels constructed before a certain date and
with a certain number of dwelling units; correcting an
obsolete reference; and altering the type of wiring required
for certain smoke detection systems.

SECTION 1. BE IT ENACTED BY THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF
MARYLAND, That the Laws of Maryland read as follows:
Article 38A - Fires and Investigations
12A.
(a) (1) Each sleeping area within all occupancies
classified residential, as defined in Chapter 11 of the National
Fire Protection Association Life Safety Code, 1976 1981 Edition,
shall be provided with a minimum of one approved smoke detector
sensing visible or invisible particles of combustion installed in
a manner and location approved by the Fire Prevention Commission.
When activated, the detector shall provide an alarm suitable to
warn the occupants.
(2) (i) [The provisions of this section do not apply
to dwelling units within existing hotels and multifamily
buildings of 10 units or more constructed prior to 1975 which
conform with the exiting requirements of the Life Safety Code.]
