included otherwise under this section. ANY LEAVE OR ABSENCE
OF NOT MORE THAN 2 YEARS' DURATION FOR FURTHER STUDY,
ILLNESS, MATERNITY, AND ANY OTHER LEAVE APPROVED BY THE
BOARD OF TRUSTEES SHALL BE APPROVED BY THE EMPLOYING AGENCY
AND SHALL BE INCLUDED AS ELIGIBILITY SERVICE.

(6) [The}, IF BY JULY 1, 1983, OR WITHIN THE 2-YEAR
PERIOD FOLLOWING HIS RETURN TO EMPLOYMENT WITH THE BOARD OR
AGENCY, WHICHEVER IS LATER, THE MEMBER PAYS TO THE PENSION
SYSTEM HIS REQUIRED CONTRIBUTION FOR THE PERIOD OF ABSENCE,
THE board of trustees, under rules that apply to all
teachers similarly situtated, may grant creditable service
for any period during which a teacher is on an approved
leave of absence that is included in his eligibility service
under § 143(5) of this subtitle. THIS SUBSECTION SHALL
APPLY TO LEAVES OF ABSENCE GRANTED TO BALTIMORE CITY
TEACHERS PRIOR TO JULY 1, 1971, IF THE TEACHER PAYS TO THE
PENSION SYSTEM ALL OF THE CONTRIBUTION REQUIRED.

FOR the purpose of allowing certain leaves of absence of a
certain duration prior to a certain date to be used for
creditable service in the Teachers Retirement and
Pension Systems, if certain conditions are met; and
providing for the payment of the reserves required to
fund such creditable service.

SECTION 1. BE IT ENACTED BY THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF
MARYLAND, That section(s) of the Annotated Code of Maryland
read(s) as follows:

Article 73B - Pensions

85.

(7) A member may receive credit towards eligibility
for benefits provided under § 86 of this subtitle for
out-of-state public school teaching service, nonpublic
school teaching service or postsecondary teaching service up
to a maximum of ten years, OR AS A BALTIMORE CITY TEACHER
PRIOR TO 1971 ON VERIFIED LEAVE OF ABSENCE OF NOT MORE THAN
2 YEARS DURATION SIMILAR IN ALL RESPECTS TO LEAVES OF
ABSENCE APPROVED BY THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES, if the member
files a claim for it with the board of trustees and pays
