(Senate Joint Resolution No. 16)

A Senate Joint Resolution concerning

Kent Island

FOR the purpose of requesting recognition that Kent Island
is the first permanent English settlement of English
speaking people within the boundaries of Maryland.

WHEREAS, The Maryland Historical Society has placed an
historical marker on the Island stating "William Claiborne
of Virginia established a trading post, settlement and fort
at the south end of this Island in 1631"; and

WHEREAS, In the Maryland Archives, Vol. 3 Folio 32, it
states that "17 August 1631 the Isle of Kent was
planted..."; and

WHEREAS, In William Claiborne's personal answer to
Cloberry's libel (Vol. 28 Folio 106, Maryland Historical
Magazine) he says, "that in or about the month of August
1631, he (sic) did take possession of one of the Islands
articulate called the Isle of Kent"; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Edward C. Papenfuse, State Archivist, Dr.
Gregory A. Stiverson, Assistant State Archivist, and Mrs.
Phoebe Jacobson, Senior Archivist have confirmed
authenticity of the above evidence; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED BY THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF MARYLAND, That Kent
Island be declared recognized as the site of the first
English permanent settlement of English speaking people
within the boundaries of Maryland.
