HARRY HUGHES, Governor                               931

before any court of competent jurisdiction in this State,
shall be fined not less than fifty dollars for any such
offense.

SECTION 2. AND BE IT FURTHER ENACTED, That this Act
shall take effect July 1, 1980.

AN ACT concerning

Baltimore City - Sheriff's Office - Expenses

FOR the purpose of providing the sheriffs in the Baltimore
City Sheriff's office with an expense allowance to
procure or maintain certain items necessary to the
execution of their duties.

BY repealing and reenacting, with amendments,

Article - Courts and Judicial Proceedings

Section 2-309(d)(l)

Annotated Code of Maryland

(1974 Volume and 1979 Supplement)

SECTION 1. BE IT ENACTED BY THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF
MARYLAND, That section(s) of the Annotated Code of Maryland
be repealed, amended, or enacted to read as follows:

Article - Courts and Judicial Proceedings

2-309.

(d) (1) In Baltimore City, the Sheriff shall receive a
salary of $25,000. He shall appoint an undersheriff and
chief deputy sheriff, three supervisory deputy sheriffs, one
deputy sheriff writ clerk and four assistant deputy sheriff
writ clerks, one stenographer and docket clerk, two clerks
and he may appoint a total of 61 deputy sheriffs. IN
ADDITION TO ANY OTHER COMPENSATION RECEIVED, EACH SHERIFF
SHALL RECEIVE AN EXPENSE ALLOWANCE OF $100 ANNUALLY FOR: (I)
AMMUNITION FOR PRACTICE SESSIONS AT THE RANGE; (II) CLOTHING
ALLOWANCE TO DEFRAY THE COST OF DRY CLEANING AND MAINTAINING
THE CLOTHING WORN WHILE ON DUTY; AND (III) THE PURCHASE AND
MAINTENANCE OF OTHER ITEMS NECESSARY TO FULFILL THEIR DUTIES
THAT CURRENTLY ARE NOT FURNISHED BY THE BALTIMORE CITY
SHERIFF'S DEPARTMENT. Salaries for these employees shall be
set by the Secretary of Personnel. A deputy sheriff who
