JOINT RESOLUTIONS
(Senate Joint Resolution No. 44)
A Senate Joint Resolution concerning
Alternative Housing Arrangements for the Elderly
FOR the purpose of requesting that the Director of the
Office on Aging provide technical assistance to
individual elderly persons and groups of older persons
seeking to create cooperative housing arrangements.
WHEREAS, Many elderly persons are financially unable to
meet the increasing costs of living independently in
single-family homes and individual apartment units; and
WHEREAS, Many elderly persons are unable to bear the
burden of maintaining independent housing units; and
WHEREAS, Many elderly persons are concerned about
avoiding social isolation as they grow older; and
WHEREAS, Many elderly persons desire congregant living
arrangements, such as boarding homes, which can alleviate
the financial burdens of independent housing; and
WHEREAS, The Office on Aging is mandated by law to
develop a statewide plan for comprehensive and coordinated
housing services for the elderly; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED BY THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF MARYLAND, That the
Director of the Office on Aging is requested to provide
technical assistance to individual elderly persons and
groups of elderly persons who wish to create cooperative
housing arrangements, to examine barriers preventing such
individuals and groups from achieving that objective, and to
undertake actions necessary to eliminate those barriers; and
be it further
RESOLVED, That copies of this Resolution be forwarded
to the Honorable James Clark, Jr., President of the Senate
of Maryland; the Honorable Benjamin L. Cardin, Speaker of
the House of Delegates; and Mr. Matthew L. Tayback, Director
of the Office on Aging, 301 W. Preston Street, Baltimore,
Maryland 21201.
