and sufficient handholds or chains for workers on the cage
to maintain their balance. The floor of the cage shall be
constructed so that it is adequate to carry the load and is
impossible for a worker's foot or body to enter any opening
in the bottom of the cage. A cage used to handle workers
shall be equipped with safety catches that act quickly and
effectively in an emergency
(e) Each cage shall be inspected daily. A test of
safety catches on the cage shall be made at least every two
months. A written record shall be Kept of any inspection and
test. The record is open for examination by any interested
person.
(f) The speed of the cage when hoisting or lowering
any worker may not exceed 900 feet a minute.
(g) There shall be at least two independent methods of
signalling, one of which shall be audible to the engineer,
from any landing in the shaft or slope.
(h) Workmen shall wear safety belts while doing repair
work in or over a shaft.
(i) If workers are working in the shaft or being
hoisted or lowered at the beginning and end of each
operating shift, an attendant shall be on duty at each cage
station where the workers are being handled. Shafts shall be
equipped with self-closing or manually controlled safety
gates at surface landings.
(j) Positive stopblocks or derails shall be placed
near shaft surface landings.
(k) At the bottom of each hoisting shaft and at
intermediate landings, a "run-around" shall be provided for
safe passage from one side of the shaft to the other. This
passageway may not be less than 5 feet in height and 3 feet
in width.]

The roadbeds, rails, joints, switches, frogs, and other
elements of the track of haulage roads shall be constructed,
installed, and maintained to assure safe operation in a
manner consistent with speed and the type of haulage
operation being conducted Track switches, except room and
entry development switches, shall be provided with properly
installed throws, bridle bars, and guardrails. If possible,
switch throws and stands shall be placed on the clearance
side.]

(a) An entrance to a motor haulage road shall have a
continuous- unobstructed clearance of at least 30 inches from
the farthest projection of moving equipment on the side
opposite the trolley wire.
