LAWS OF MARYLAND

Ch. 418

The operator shall direct and see that as the miners
advance in their excavation, any dangerous and doubtful
piece of strata overhead is taken down or carefully secured.
He shall adopt sound methods of timbering the roof and
spragging the coal, which are uniform throughout the mine so
far as feasible and approved by the district mine inspector.
Any worker who neglects or refuses to obey any proper
instruction or order relating to securing his working place
shall be suspended or discharged. If any neglect or refusal
results in injury to any person, the name of the worker and
the facts shall be reported to the district mine inspector.
But if any worker has previously given timely notice to the
operator of his need for materials, or of an existing
dangerous condition which he could not personally remedy, he
shall not be held to have violated the provisions of this
section.]

[7-411.

Provision shall be made for proper ventilation of a
shaft while it is being sunk. Until a second means of outlet
becomes available from any part of any mine worked by a
shaft, a cage or other safe means of egress shall be
available at all times for the use of every person within
the mine. During the construction or deepening of any shaft,
provision shall be made for protection of any worker against
any accident in the shaft. Unless the strata being
penetrated are solid, every shaft shall be lined, cased, or
otherwise made secure. The operator shall direct and see
that any loose rock or other dangerous material is removed
from the sides of the shaft or from any staging or timbers,
especially after each blast. If a person is employed on
platforms in a shaft, the operator shall see that it is
properly and safely constructed and secured.]

[7-412.

It is the legislative intent that self-closing doors be
installed on a main haulage road if the bureau considers it
feasible and practical. If it is not feasible or practicable
to install self-closing doors, the Bureau, after a study of
the operating conditions of each particular mine, may
prescribe rules and regulations relating to the duties of
the attendant. The attendant in any case shall open the door
for persons and cars to pass through and close it as soon as
the persons and cars are in the clear.]

[7-413.

(a)  The permanent boilers used for generating steam
and buildings containing them may not be constructed nearer
than 60 feet to any mine opening, building, or inflammable
structure connected with the opening.

(b)  At least once every six months, and more often if
the district mine inspector requires, each boiler used for
generating steam in or about any mine shall be inspected
